Winter Policy and Explanation
During the winter months, December through March, waste removal is an entirely different process in northern climates. In general, the work is much, much more laborsome and time consuming. We are not able to provide the normal weekly, bi-weekly, etc., service schedule. Rather, we provide service on a WASP (weather and schedule permitting) basis. In short, we will be out less often and work much harder and longer when we are out.
During winter, we will encounter the following conditions.
* Very Recent Snowfall
As little as 1 inch of recent snowfall can impair our ability to locate waste. In the case of recent snow, we will not waste resources by driving a route only to be unable to locate any waste.
* Waste visible but embedded in soft flakey snow.
When we encounter this situation, removal becomes very difficult and time consuming because we pick up a lot of snow along with the waste. This situation creates increased labor and disposal costs due to weight increases of 10 times the normal volume.
* Waste visible but frozen into hard snow and ice.
This situation requires that we literally have to displace every single piece of waste with a shovel and then struggle to round the waste up from the slippery uneven surface of the ice and snow. This process is extremely laborsome and costly to provide.
* Thorough mid-winter thaw.
This occurrence is what we hope for al winter. Problem is, we don't always get a mid-winter thaw, or they don't last long enough to catch all of our clients up. When we do work during a mid-winter thaw, we are slowed by the fact that there is an accumulation created by the fact that we fell behind, creating, again, an increase in labor and time involved with our service visits.
We provide these details because we've learned through the years that many of our clients simply do not understand these realities. We do the best we can during the winter and work much harder than at any other time of the year. We ask that our clients take one of two actions concerning winter:
Option #1 Trust Us!
We will do the best we can and we know exactly what we are doing. If you feel compelled to complain about our winter service, we ask that you go with option #2.
Option #2 Suspend service for winter.
We would rather have you suspend than complain when we are doing the best anyone could possibly do under the circumstances. When you suspend for winter, we will stop service January 1st and resume when weather permits, usually in March. There will be a spring clean billed in advance at the cost of $85.
